How to raise your prices without losing clients

The fear is almost never about the number. It is about having to defend it out loud. That is why pricing advice alone rarely changes what a founder actually charges.

The short answer

Change what you are selling at the same time as the price. Move from deliverables to outcome, tell existing clients with a date and a reason rather than an apology, and stop offering discounts nobody asked for.

Then hold the number for three proposals before judging it. Most founders abandon a new price after one uncomfortable call.

Why the price is stuck

Usually one of three things. You are selling a deliverable, so you are being compared on rate. You are over-servicing, so the fee already feels generous to you. Or you have quietly decided the work is not worth more, and the client hears that before they hear the price.

The sequence that works

1. Reprice the outcome. Name the commercial result the client gets. If you cannot state it in one sentence, the price is not the problem yet.

2. Cut the scope you were giving away. A higher price with the same unbounded scope just buys you more resentment.

3. Test on new proposals first. Three proposals at the new number before touching existing clients.

4. Migrate existing clients with a date.Notice, reason, effective date. One message, no negotiation invited.

5. Stop discounting pre-emptively. If you drop the number before it is challenged, read why founders discount before being asked.

What actually breaks the pattern

Rehearsing the number until saying it is boring. Most of the lift comes from the founder being genuinely unbothered by silence after they say the price. That is trainable, and it is the part we work on directly.

Common questions

How do I raise my prices without losing clients?
Raise the price and change what is being bought at the same time. Reprice on outcome rather than deliverables, give existing clients a clear date and a reason, and stop volunteering discounts. Expect to lose the clients who were only ever buying cheap.
How much can I increase my price by?
For most under-priced service founders the first correction is larger than they expect, because they have been benchmarking against competitors who are also under-priced. Price against the value of the outcome, then test it on the next three proposals rather than the whole client base.
What do I tell existing clients?
Give notice, a date, and one honest sentence about what has changed in the level of work. Do not apologise, do not over-explain, and do not offer an alternative lower tier in the same message.
What if a client says no?
Some will, and that is the point of the exercise. A price that nobody declines is usually too low. Losing the bottom of your list is normally what creates the capacity to serve the top of it properly.

She had been selling $1,000 funnels. The next deal closed at $9,500.

From $1,000 funnels to a $9,500 deal.

I have been building funnels for seven years. My husband and I ran an agency with around 12 team members, then chose to go lean and focus on fewer, better clients. I found Charlene on Facebook, had heard her speak before, and joined the masterclass because I was looking for a way to close bigger deals and support my family.
